Halloween is one of the easier times of year to get a team together for something fun. It has a theme, it gives people an excuse to dress up and it does not clash with the end of year rush. Here are ideas that work, whether everyone is in the office or on a call.
Team Escape Room Challenge
Split the team into small groups of three or four and give each group the same online escape room. The fastest team wins. Because every group plays the same game, it is fair, and comparing notes afterwards is half the fun.
Our team packs give each person or group a code and put every time on one leaderboard, so you can run it across offices or with people at home. Ward 13 and Silent Night both take around an hour. For a lunchtime version, The Skeleton’s Curse takes ten minutes and is free.
Desk Or Background Decorating Contest
In the office, give everyone a small budget to decorate their desk. Remote teams can do the same with their video call background. Vote at the end of the day.
Halloween Quiz
A quiz is easy to run in person or online. Mix general Halloween questions with a round about the company: who has the scariest commute, which meeting room is haunted, that kind of thing.
Bake Off
Spooky cakes and biscuits brought in for judging, then eaten. Remote teams can show their bakes on camera and send photos for a vote.
Costume Day
Keep it optional and make it easy: a hat or a mask counts. Give a prize for the best low effort costume so nobody feels left out.
Making It Work
- Keep it in work hours. Evening events always lose people with children or long commutes.
- Make it optional, but make it fun enough that people want to come.
- Pick mixed teams so people work with someone new.
- Keep the scary stuff optional too. Not everyone likes jump scares, so offer a crime game like Harbour House as an alternative.
