Not everyone can get to the same house for Halloween. The good news is that some of the best Halloween games work just as well over a video call, and a few work even better. Here are the ones worth setting up.
Online Escape Rooms
This is the big one. One person shares their screen and drives, and everybody else watches and shouts. Because everyone sees the same room, the clues get spotted faster and the arguments are louder.
- The Skeleton’s Curse is free, takes ten minutes and needs no account. Perfect for a first go.
- Silent Night is our horror house for grown ups, about an hour long, and it saves as you go if you need to stop.
- Ward 13 is set in an abandoned hospital, also about an hour.
Tip: the person sharing their screen should turn their game sound up and share audio too, so everyone hears the scares.
Halloween Pub Quiz
Take turns to host a round. Horror films, Halloween around the world, famous haunted houses and a music round of spooky film themes. Keep scores in a shared note.
Scary Story Relay
One person starts a ghost story with a single sentence, then passes to the next person on the call. Keep going round until the story ends or somebody refuses to carry on.
Costume Contest On Camera
Everyone dresses up, then takes a turn walking past their camera. Vote in the chat. Pets in costumes are allowed and usually win.
Guess The Horror Film From The Emoji
The host types emoji into the chat and everyone races to name the film. A shark and a beach is easy. A balloon and a drain is a little harder.
Making It Work On A Call
- Keep the group to eight or fewer, or split into breakout rooms.
- Pick one host to run the evening so it does not stall.
- Everyone not talking stays on mute, apart from screaming.
